What is a market location ID, or Malo ID for short?

The market location ID (Malo ID) is a 11-digit, unique number for your point of consumption — i.e. your electricity or gas connection in the energy market — like an “identity card” for your point of consumption. In most cases, the ID starts with a 5 or a 1 and persists permanently, regardless of which provider or network operator is currently responsible for your connection.

Note: The market location ID is different for electricity and gas. A separate Malo ID is assigned for each type of energy.

Benefits of the MALO ID for you:
  • Your Malo ID is the key so that we can uniquely assign your connection.
  • It is a prerequisite for starting the transition properly and correctly registering your supply in the energy market.
  • It protects you from confusion when assigning the point of consumption.
  • And the best part: The Malo ID always remains the same, even if your meter is replaced.

How to find your Malo ID

The market location ID is assigned to you by your network operator. You can find them on your electricity bill or in your contract. If you can't find them, feel free to ask your network operator. When you move in, you often receive your market location ID from your landlord or from the property management company.

Why do I need the market location ID?

The market location ID is mainly required when changing providers, as it makes it possible to correctly identify your power connection. It also plays a role in communication with the network operator and is important when you need information about your meter reading, consumption or even changes to the network connection.

Malo ID when moving: What to consider?

When you move, you don't just keep your old Malo ID. It belongs exclusively to the previous point of consumption (i.e. the connection to your old apartment) and remains there. For your new place of residence, you will receive your own MALO ID, which belongs to this connection.

New buildings or connections that have not yet been registered on the market do not yet have a MALO ID. In such cases, you must apply to the network operator for a network connection. After the meter is installed, the network operator assigns the new Malo ID and tells you it.

Measurement location vs. market location: What is the difference?

In the past, terms such as counting point, delivery point or measuring point were often used differently. The Federal Network Agency (BNetzA) has standardized these terms as part of meter modernization: Since then, there has been the Measurement location (MeLO) And the Market location (MaLo).

Measurement location

The measurement location describes the location where actual energy consumption is recorded, for example by an electricity or gas meter. It is assigned to the associated point of consumption, also known as a market location. At this point, it is measured which amounts of energy are consumed. The measurement location ID replaces the previous counting point number and consists of a total of 33 characters, always beginning with “DE”.

Market location

A market location (MaLo) describes a place where energy is either used or generated, for example in an apartment or a company building. It is connected to the public electricity or gas network and therefore has a network connection. Each market location is assigned an individual identification number, the so-called MALO ID. This is used to clearly identify the respective place of consumption or production and to manage it organizationally.

What is the meter number?

The meter number is a unique and invariable identifier that is assigned to a specific electricity meter. It is used exclusively to uniquely identify and correctly assign the respective meter. Only when the meter is replaced does the meter number change. Important: The meter number does not record energy consumption, but is only used to identify the meter.

What is the meter reading?

The meter reading is the current value that is displayed on your electricity meter and measures your total electricity consumption up to that point in time. The meter reading is expressed in kilowatt hours (kWh) and shows how much electricity you have consumed since the last reading or since the meter was installed.

How do the market location ID, meter number, and meter reading differ?

There is a clear distinction between these three terms: Market location ID: This ID is used to uniquely identify your power connection. It is required for administrative purposes and remains the same regardless of which provider supplies you. Meter number: This number belongs to your electricity meter and is used to uniquely identify the meter. It is required in order to be able to correctly assign the meter. Meter reading: The meter reading shows the current consumption of your electricity meter. It is measured in kWh and is used to calculate your energy consumption. The market location ID always remains the same, even if you change providers or your electricity meter is replaced. Your meter has a meter number that is unique to your electricity meter. The meter reading is the consumption that your meter has registered up to the present day.
