The meter number simply explained: This is how you find it and distinguish it from the meter reading

meter number

The meter number is the “serial number” of your electricity meter. You can find them right on the device, often next to a bar code or type plate. It is important so that it is clear which meter is being read or billed.

When a new meter is installed, the meter number changes — but your Malo ID as a connection indicator remains the same.

Benefits of a meter number for you:

  • It allows you to uniquely identify your electricity meter.
  • It ensures that your power consumption is measured correctly and is necessary for correct and error-free billing.
  • The meter number is required when you submit your meter reading to us.

How to find your meter number

You can find the meter number directly on your electricity meter. It is usually clearly visible, usually on a label or sticker on the device. If you don't have access to the meter right now, you can also look up the meter number in your last electricity bill or in your contract, provided that it is listed there.

Where is my electricity meter?

As a rule, the electricity meter is located in easily accessible but rather functional places:

  • Single-family house: technical room, cellar, corridor or staircase.
  • (Rental) apartment: In a meter cabinet in the basement, in the stairwell or, in exceptional cases, in the apartment itself.

Tip: First, look where there are also fuses or the fuse box and ask the property management, landlord or caretaker if necessary. The meter is also often noted in the handover documentation for the apartment.

meter reading

The meter reading shows the total consumption currently recorded on your electricity meter. It is expressed in kilowatt hours (kWh) and shows how much electricity has been consumed since the last reading or since the meter was started up. To read the meter reading, look at your electricity meter.

Benefits of the meter reading for you:

  • It forms the basis for a correct electricity bill without estimates. In this way, discrepancies or errors in billing can be avoided.
  • It shows the actual power consumption.
  • It is particularly important if you regularly transmit the meter reading yourself.

How and when do I read my meter reading?

You usually read your electricity meter once a year. Reading is particularly useful

  • at the start of your power supply and
  • at the end of the accounting year.

However, in certain situations, an additional reading may be necessary, for example:

  • in the event of a change of provider,
  • during a move,
  • or when an interim statement is to be created.

This ensures that your electricity consumption is correctly recorded and billed.

The meter reading can be read directly on your electricity meter. Older devices display an analog meter, while modern electricity meters display consumption digitally on a display.

Tip: Always write down only the currently displayed value so that the figures are as up to date as possible. When moving, you should also read the status together with your landlord or the new tenant and record it in writing in a handover report.
