Power Meters, Smart Meters & Intelligent Metering Systems

Can I replace my old three-phase meter?

Yes, the exchange is possible — your metering point operator is usually responsible.

If you want to replace your old three-phase meter with a modern smart meter, your metering point operator (often identical to the network operator) is the right person to contact. He organizes the installation, settles the meter replacement with you and is responsible for operation and maintenance. You can find the contact details on your meter, on your network or annual statement or in your contract confirmation.

What do I have to consider when installing a new meter?

If a new meter has been installed, your network or metering point operator must report this change to us. Only then can we store your new meter in our system and bill it correctly.

After we receive the message, we automatically check whether your tariff is still the best fit and adjust it together with you if necessary.

What is the difference between a smart meter and an intelligent measurement system (iMS)?

A smart meter is a digital meter. An iMS, on the other hand, is the “extended” version — a smart meter with a communication module (gateway) that automatically and securely transmits your consumption. Only with an iMS can you take full advantage of dynamic tariffs, for example.

Simply explained:

data transmission

Timely, accurate billing (e.g. every 15 minutes) possible

Dynamic rates

Optimal/full use of dynamic tariffs possible

important: Not every smart meter is automatically an iMS. Only the gateway makes it an intelligent measurement system.

How do I get a smart meter or an intelligent measurement system (iMS)?

Digital display = smart meter

digital display + Smart meter gateway = intelligent measurement system

A intelligent measurement system (iMS) consists of two components:

  1. Digital electricity meter (modern measuring device)
  2. smart meter gateway (communication module)

You recognize an IM

  • a digital display instead of a mechanical turntable or rollers,
  • an additional gateway module, usually a small device with LED, barcode or separate seal, which is attached to the meter.

The difference to a smart meter:

  • Smart meter = digital meter (possibly with limited transmission)
  • iMS = digital meter plus gateway → automatic and secure data transmission for timely billing and dynamic rates

If you're unsure:

  • Look at the ad (is the ad digital?)
  • Check whether a separate gateway is installed on the meter.
  • Ask the metering point operator — we can't check for you whether an iMS is already installed on your connection.

Contact your metering point or network operator directly to clarify

  • whether a smart meter or an iMS is available on your connection
  • when installation is possible,
  • What costs could arise.

The metering point operator will also inform you whether it is possible to upgrade from Smart Meter to iMS (e.g. by retrofitting a gateway).
